Some of you may know me. I’ve been at the helm of Liveandletdiecast.kinja.com for awhile now. It’s about diecast collecting. We love cars. Even if we can’t afford them, we’ll buy a $100 version and dream about it..

Recently I p !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , and how I grew up with them. I also find their actions over the the last decade reprehensible. There were several comments along the lines of “all big companies do this...” to the usual “hey, you drive a car...you’re just as complicit in screwing up the environment.” etc.

I don’t think it is an either/or issue . You can enjoy driving and still find that a company with a few corrupt individuals can fuck the popula tion (there are 7 billion of us) so that they could make a couple thousand of Euros wicked and immoral.

Driving is a blast. I love it. I will not forget or forgive a massive corporation poisoning the air we breathe for a couple dollars though.

Well said. The “all companies do this” thing is absolutely the worst excuse ever. All companies need to be held responsible for their actions. Plain and simple. To me, part of the problem is that society as a whole has become so numb and complacent that nobody cares anymore. What's worse is that it isn't just towards the automotive industry. It's towards everything. People need a wake up call that will jolt them out of this. It hasn't happened yet, but at the rate we're going it will and it won't be pretty.

Don’t buy Chevy either. No real reasons, just they make bad cars.

My first car was also a VW, and I also agree with you. Their cheating was blatant and widespread far beyond any company. They showed themselves to be very immoral. And; I do not trust them; they may do it again.

Totally off topic, but can I get posting privelages or at least bumped out of the grays there, hard to figure out who a moderator is.  On a side note I almost bought a Jetta TDI manual shortly before dieselgate.  However, dealers thought the cars were made of gold and they commanded a hefty premium I didn't want to pay.  Glad I didn't now, and though prices are better now, I am kind be of soured to the whole thing

On the other hand, you’re attempting to condemn the hundreds of thousands of people who work for VAG to an untimely unemployment on the actions of a select few.  Perhaps you should be calling for consequences on the individuals responsible, and not the innocent people just trying to make a living.  Just saying.

I mean at least 100 people died to save a few pennies in the ignition.

Oh and they bought street car companies to shut them down to sell more cars.

Kinja'd!!!

Also they invented leaded gas and lied about how bad it was for decades.

Yea, when Detroit had to dig out old street car tracks to lay new ones, I went “wait, what?” Then did s ome googling and got upset.

To those asking for citations for claims that VW isn’t the only cheater out there, these two came from a Google search for “companies cheating emissions”:

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/jun/06/impossible-to-cheat-emissions-tests-show-almost-all-new-diesels-still-dirty

Highlight: “Diesel cars shown by the True data to emit far more NOx than the official baseline when on the road included two-litre Fiat Chrysler models – 18 times more – and 1.6-litre Renault Nissan models – 14 times more – though the cars passed legally required tests.”

https://qz.com/986372/its-not-just-volkswagen-every-diesel-car-company-is-emitting-more-pollution-than-tests-show/

Highlight: “ Mitsubishi recently admitted to cheating on emission tests in Japan, the US accused Fiat Chrysler of a similar scheme, and Peugeot Citroen and Daimler are under investigation by French and German prosecutors, respectively, for possibly cheating diesel emissions testing.

By now, it has begun to dawn on the regulatory community that illegal levels of emissions may be an industry standard . And according to a study published Monday in the journal Nature , global NOx emissions from diesel vehicles may be more than 50% higher than regulators thought.”

My ultimate takeaway from this is that I wish every company were held as accountable for their actions as VAG or even Takata was. A massive company shouldn’t be able to just throw money at a catastrophe that they caused.

This is....how can I say it politely? Total and complete bullshit. I’m not saying someone in Mexico working on the assembly line making Jettas should lose their job . I’m not even sure why you’d get that impression. We should hold corporations accountable, and it really feels like collectively we’ve decided to give  them a pass.

But that’s the ultimate endpoint of your crusade. If everyone stopped buying VWs/Audis/Skodas/Porsches/Lamborghinis/Bugattis/SEATs/whatever, then the factories have to be shut down and a few hundred thousand employees are out of a job. If the company’s sales drop to zero, then it goes out of business.

I have no interest in owning a VW product btw...but that doesn’t really have anything to do with the pollution scandal.  I just don’t see how you can want people to not buy a VW product and think the employees won’t be affected.

To a degree, that’s fair. And I absolutely agree that a person has a right to make a living and should not be punished by the actions of people that make 100 or even 1000 s of times more and they’ll never meet.

However , I have to disagree that it is somehow a “crusade” to hold multi- billion dollar corporations to an ethical and moral standard.

I should add here that it’s okay to want a company to go out of business.  I don’t hold it against you...I just think that if you’re going to hold this opinion, you have to be okay with what the opinion leads to ultimately.

In New Jersey and Oregon, the law prohibits you from pumping your own gas. Multiple times people have voted in both states to keep those laws on the books. The biggest argument people make is....but what about the employees?? They’ll be out of a job! Weirdly, 48 states haven’t suddenly decided to pass laws so that gas station attendants can be employed. Pumping your own gas has proven to be pretty safe. Is it the fault of people in Iowa or Minnesota that some people can’t find work pumping gas?

Cars will still be made. Lots and lots of them. Calling out a company for blatantly disregarding the rules and cheating does not suddenly mean that everyone who has ever worked for that company is complicit and should be punished. The “end game” simply put is not to have everyone fired. You should vote with your wallet. If a company lies, steals, treats their employees like shit.... don’t buy from them. Buy from a company that makes life a little better for their workers. Otherwise you are just perpetuating a cycle.
